Territo-

The results of the Survey of the New

ry are given below, in a summary dealing with the outturn alone up to the 1st. March, 1991.

Triangulation:-

An area of (4,000) Four Thousand Square Miles has been triangulated; those of the points laid down which are situated within the New Territory are being marked. The methods of the Indian Surveys have been rigorously adhered to in effecting this triangulation and the results work out satisfactorily.

Topography:

An area of (300) Three Hundred Square Miles

has been surveyed on the Scale of 1 inch to a mile. It is accurate to scale. This survey, also has been kept up to the standard fix- ed for such work, in India, by the Survey of India Department. Cadastral Surveys:- An area of (45,000) Forty-Five Thousand acres has been surveyed on the Scales of 18 and 32 inches to a Bile. The change to the larger scale being rendered necessary as soon as the wider valleys had been surveyed, and more minute detail had to be delineated. It was also necessary for the purposes of the Crown Rent Roll. The Cadastral Surveys having been under- taken solely for the use of the Land Court a departure, to a slight degree, from the procedure in vogue in India for such Surveys was effected in order to meet the demands and the re- quirements of the Land Court.

A special Survey of the Chinese Town of Kau Lung and the walled or fortified portion of the same, was also made, on the Scale of 64 inches to a mile.

In conclusion taking into consideration various circumstances, and the conditions under which the Surveys have been carried on, the progress of the work is not unsatis- factory; while enormous interest is attached to it as it is the first Systematic Survey made in China.

11th. March, 1901.:
